Telluride Daily Planet – PASANG Wins Best Adventure Film

Telluride Daily Planet announces the winners for the Telluride summer film festival, Mountainfilm. PASANG: In the Shadow of Everest won the Charlie Fowler Best Adventure Film.

The jury stated,

“The film chronicles an unsung hero, Pasang Lhamu Sherpa’s tragic and inspiring journey to become the first Nepali woman to summit Chomolungma in 1993. The story is brilliantly captured through rarely seen archival footage and the words of Nepali friends and relatives. Her determined pursuit to climb the mountain plays out within the context of her nation’s quest for democracy and political upheaval and is a hitherto untold tale that fits today’s emerging trend of Indigenous reclamation of the Himalaya. This combined with Pasang’s spirit and determination makes this the perfect winner for the Charlie Fowler Best Adventure award.”

BIFF: A Very Sweet Sixteen/Part II

The Berkshire Edge of Massachusetts features an interview with Christy McGill, BIFF alum and Producer for PASANG: In the Shadow of Everest.

“This is a beautiful film that deeply probes the structural inequalities in Nepal. Pasang changed the country and fulfilled a national destiny.  There were more people at her funeral than the King’s”. Her astonishing achievement was tempered with tragedy, as Pasang never made it down from the summit alive. “It’s our feeling that Pasang’s name should be known worldwide, and that Nancy’s film is really about correcting an omission in the record of history.” Pasang is an inspiration to Nepalis, and now her story can touch the world. “We were at Santa Barbara International Film Festival with Pasang’s daughter. Watching her watch the film was incredibly moving and gratifying.” As for the director Nancy Svendsen, this has been a labor of deep love and commitment: “Nancy has been making this film on and off for ten years”, Christy explains with a note of sincere admiration, “I look at her work on this project as a profile in courage. And this is her very first film”.

Golden Globe Awards – The Remarkable and Untold Story of “PASANG: In the Shadow of Everest”

Pasang: In the Shadow of Everest is featured on the Golden Globe Awards website.

“Pasang, as a Nepali woman, had to face all kinds of barriers. She left an arranged marriage to marry a man she fell in love with. The newlyweds eloped and ran away from their village. Later they started their own trekking and guide business in Kathmandu. Svendsen was so touched by everything Pasang had to overcome in life that she wanted to share it with the rest of the world. “It was just one of those ‘aha moments’ that you have, you know. I mean, here’s this super famous person in Nepal. She’s got a statue, a postage stamp, hospitals and schools named after her. Yet, nobody has ever told her story.”
