THE FILM
Pasang Lhamu Sherpa’s tragic and inspiring journey to become
the first Nepali woman to summit Everest in 1993 comes to life
in PASANG: In the Shadow of Everest.
As an uneducated, indigenous woman and a Buddhist in a
Hindu kingdom, Pasang’s dream to scale the legendary
mountain pits her against family, foreign climbers, her own
government, and nature itself. Her determined pursuit of
Everest plays out within the context of her nation’s quest for
democracy and the emergence of the commercial climbing
industry.
As told by the Nepalis who knew her, by some of the world’s
most notable alpinists, and by Pasang herself, her historic
quest would transfix her country and uplift a new generation’s
belief in its possibilities.
“The new documentary, Pasang: In the
Shadow of Everest, brings to life the
untold and inspiring story of her
emotional, physical and political journey
to the world’s highest peak.”
WHY THIS FILM
Stories have the power to change people’s minds. Pasang’s
story asks:
● Who gets to take risks?
● What does self-determination look like in societies
with systemic oppression?
● How can one person’s life and legacy inspire change?
● What are the makings of a leader?
Pasang’s fight for gender and racial equality turned
“impossible into possible” for millions of Nepali women, and
her story is one of universal appeal that resonates with
people of all ages and all demographic backgrounds.

The Power of Connecting Through Storytelling
Our experience bringing the award-winning PASANG: In the
Shadow of Everest to film festivals around the world and into
corporations, local theaters, and intimate home settings, has
illustrated the power of a shared moment to broaden minds,
exchange ideas, and inspire souls. Through Pasang’s story we
find ourselves immersed in the Sherpa culture in Nepal and
cheering the indomitable spirit of a woman determined to follow
her dream against all odds. Nancy Svendsen is a mesmerizing
speaker and loves to share her experience transitioning from the
corporate world to that of a filmmaker/storyteller, as well as the
hard earned lessons along the way. She is usually joined by her
brother-in-law, Dorjee Sherpa, Pasang’s eldest brother.
“This film is a poignant example of the
many untold tales of female heroism that
are frequently under-recognized. Pasang:
In The Shadow of Everest is an inspiring
story that deserves the attention and
recognition of international audiences…
Filmmaker Nancy Svendsen does a lovely
job presenting Pasang’s tenacity and
determination, which boldly shines
through.”

“There are 2 national heroes in Nepal, my father
Tenzing who summited Everest with Hillary in 1953.
And Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, who became the first
Nepali woman to summit in 1993. My father is well
known – Pasang is not. This film can bring her
inspirational story to the world.”
A passionate storyteller since her childhood in
rural Iowa, Nancy Svendsen turned from the
healthcare field to filmmaking. Her first
feature documentary tells the story of Pasang
Lhamu Sherpa – the first Nepali woman to
summit Mt. Everest. Related to Pasang by
marriage, Nancy brings nuance and depth to a
moving and inspiring story.
What Companies Are Saying
“We hosted a screening of PASANG: In the Shadow of Everest followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers at our corporate headquarters. It was a pleasure and a joy to feature the work of local and independent filmmakers, as well as celebrate Pasang Lhamu Sherpa’s awe-inspiring story of hope, perseverance, and triumph. The filmmakers and Pasang embody what it truly means to follow your dreams”.
~ J.K., Salesforce
“We enjoyed your film so much, you really touched all of us in a great way. We are all so very grateful, our clients are still talking about how great the film was! More and more people need to see this film, so my goal is to double the attendance in Marin.
~ J.M., Fidelity Investments
“I was really fortunate to host an event a few months back for Liberty’s “LEAAP” organization (Leading and Engaging Asian and Ally Professionals), I am the U.S. West Region Co-Executive sponsor. We learned of this movie – PASANG – and heard the incredible story of its characters and its making. The message is incredibly powerful, highlighting the struggle of women and people of Asian descent. We hosted the film’s Director/Producer, the Executive Producer (both women), and Pasant’s oldest brother. We had over 800 people attend in several countries where Liberty operates. After our Seattle sessions, one of our employees walked up to introduce herself, she was born and raised in Nepal and knew Pasang was an icon – BUT SHE HAD NO IDEA WHAT HER STORY WAS! And that’s what this is about, getting this incredible story out. We compensated them for their time and travel and it’s the best investment I’ve made for building on our culture at Liberty.”
