New York Times – ‘Pasang: In the Shadow of Everest’ Review: A Barrier-Breaking Ascent

Ben Keningsberg of The New York Times published a  review of PASANG: In the Shadow of Everest on Jan. 18, 2024.

“Drawing on interviews with family members and fellow climbers, “Pasang: In the Shadow of Everest” describes the various social, national and financial obstacles that Sherpa encountered. Jan Arnold, a New Zealand doctor and climber who was on Everest contemporaneously, vividly explains the physical toll that acclimating to the mountain can take.”

The Weekend Warrior – This Week’s “Chosen One”

Edward Douglas published a positive review of PASANG: In the Shadow of Everest on Substack. He’s been writing about movies for over twenty five years.

“This is an amazing story that I’m not sure is known to many Westerners, but Pasang became a bit of a legend in Nepal, because she went against all the odds, including being a woman, to do something the few thought she could achieve. Her determination and enthusiasm to climbing is quite infectious, though I’m going to try to be a little careful with spoilers on this one – yes, a doc – but it’s terrific how Svendsen tells this story and brings this inspirational woman to the forefront, including interviews with her daughter and other Nepali Alpinists to really make clear why her efforts were so important to making changes in the male-dominated Nepali climbing hierarchy. This is a terrific doc that I’m worried more people won’t have a chance to see since it’s getting such a small release, but hopefully, it will make its way to a streamer.”

Pasang: In the Shadow of Everest should do for Pasang Lhasa Sherpa what Fire of Love did for Katia and Maurice Krafft: bringing to the world’s attention the remarkable achievements of an adventurer and trailblazer who lived life with fearless passion.” ~ Loren King

Lex Limbu – The Force that was Pasang Lhamu Sherpa

Lex Limbu, Host of the Nepal Premiere in Kathmandu

Lex Limbu,  a well known Nepalese public figure with over 100,000 followers on Facebook,  hosted the Nepal Premiere screening in Kathmandu, Nepal. On April 26th, 2022, he published an article entitled, “the Force that was Pasang Lhamu Sherpa”. In the article, Lex Limbu  writes:

Being the host for the premiere screening felt like a full circle moment for me. I remembered how amped I was when I first saw the documentary trailer. To finally have the opportunity to watch the documentary in full was a moment. Director Nancy Svendsen and all those that backed the project have presented a gift. They’ve brought a story of a hero to life and incredibly, we hear a lot from the hero Pasang herself! That’s something that I really enjoyed about the documentary. It’s not overshadowed by experts and others.

The Himalayan Times published an article entitled, “The heartening journey of a courageous woman who was Pasang Lhamu.”

Svendsen said, “Pasang is an important figure for Nepal and her story has a universal appeal to the world. The foreign climbers completely dismissed her motivation, despite the fact that it was her mountain. She was a brave girl who faced many struggles and endured against all odds. She fought for a complete new image for Nepali women.”
